The Four Accounts That Organise Your Money
Almost everyone who tells me they are bad with money is actually keeping every dollar in one account and asking themselves the same question thirty times a month. Remove the question and the problem mostly goes away.
The four buckets
- Income. Everything lands here and nothing is spent from here. This account only distributes.
- Fixed costs. Rent, insurance, minimum payments, utilities. Every autopay points here.
- Living. Groceries, gas, whatever you want. When it is empty, the month is over. No guilt, no tracking.
- Reserve. Untouched, no card attached, ideally at a different bank so moving money takes a day.
Automate the split on payday
Set transfers to run the day after each deposit lands. You decide the percentages once, in a calm moment, instead of deciding again every time you are standing in a store. That is the whole trick: you are not more disciplined, you just have fewer decisions.
Save first and spend what is left. Spending first and saving what is left has never worked for anyone.
Where the reserve goes
Three to six months of fixed costs, in a high-yield savings account, is what turns an emergency into an inconvenience. Without it, every setback becomes a credit card balance, and that balance becomes the reason you cannot save. The whole point is to break that loop once.
Start with one month. It is not the amount that changes things, it is proving to yourself that the structure holds.
